Can I just use a handyman to do my electrical work? Absolutely not. Some customers think they are getting a better deal by using a handyman, but as the saying goes, “you get what you pay for”. Most handyman services are not licensed to do electrical work and have limited knowledge of electrical systems. This often leads to misdiagnosed problems, insufficient repairs, and / or installations that are not up to code, creating additional problems and possibly safety hazards. It is always best to use a licensed professional for electrical issues.

What is the purpose of a circuit breaker? A circuit breaker is a safety device. A tripping circuit breaker is an indication that something is wrong with the circuit. While there could be many minor reasons for a tripping breaker, it could also indicate a larger underlying problem. Continually resetting a breaker that is repeatedly tripping could cause a fire hazard, or further damage to the circuit or the breaker itself. If your breaker is continually tripping, it is best to have it assessed by an electrician.

What are the common causes of electrical fires? Electrical fires are often caused by old faulty wiring, and old faulty breaker panels. When a circuit becomes overloaded, or develops a short, it should trip the circuit breaker. Old breakers will sometimes not trip. This causes wire to heat up and catch on fire. It is important to have your panel assessed periodically to check for proper operation. If you think your panel looks old or not well maintained, you should have it checked out by an electrician. If the brand name on your panel is FEDERAL PACIFIC, you should have this replaced immediately. These are notorious for starting fires!
